The Pointer's Super Sense

Pointer dogs have an incredible sense of smell, which is much stronger than a human's. This super sense helps them find birds in tall grass or bushes. When a Pointer smells a bird, its brain tells its body to freeze and point its nose towards the bird. This natural behavior, called "pointing," is a special skill that makes them excellent hunting partners. Their keen sense of smell is a key part of their success.

How do you think a Pointer's strong sense of smell helps it survive in the wild or as a working dog?

Read the size clue

Imagine a Pointer dog lying down. From its nose to its tail, it can be as long as your dad's arm, about 80.0 centimeters (800 millimeters)! This is like laying about eight standard rulers end-to-end. If it stands up, it's about 66.0 centimeters tall, which is taller than a typical school chair. Its body is about 23.0 centimeters deep, roughly the length of a small lunchbox. These dimensions show it's a medium to large-sized, athletic dog.
