Rhea Research
Rheas are flightless birds, meaning they cannot fly. This is because their bones are solid, unlike flying birds which have hollow bones to be lighter. Their powerful, long legs and strong muscles are adapted for running at high speeds, up to 60 kilometers per hour (37 miles per hour), to escape predators like pumas. Their large wings help them balance when they run and change direction quickly, acting like rudders.
Why do you think rheas evolved to be fast runners instead of flyers, even though they are birds?

Read the size clue
A rhea is a truly large bird! It stands about 1.50 meters (1500mm) tall, which is taller than most kids and even some adults. Imagine it being as tall as your dad! It is also wide, about 1.20 meters (1200mm), like a small sofa. Its depth is 40.0 cm (400mm), which is about the length of your forearm. These dimensions help it run fast and stay stable.
Quick Check
How tall is a rhea in meters?
Estimate
Stand up. How tall do you think 1.50 meters is? Mark that height on a wall with your hand.
Find an object in your room that is about 40 cm long. Is it longer or shorter than a rhea's depth?
