About Elephant

Elephants are the largest living land animals, belonging to the family Elephantidae. They are native to Africa and Asia, where they inhabit savannas, forests, and grasslands. A notable fact: elephants have the longest gestation period of any mammal—22 months—and newborn calves can stand within minutes of birth.

Size Overview

A mature African elephant stands about 330 cm (10.8 feet) tall at the shoulder, roughly the height of a one-story house. Its body length can exceed 6 meters (20 feet), and it weighs up to 6,000 kg (13,000 lb)—heavier than two pickup trucks. Despite this immense size, elephants are surprisingly agile and can run up to 40 km/h (25 mph).
